Presided over by the Port Authority of Barcelona, Plaça del Portal de la Pau is the Port Vell’s “institutional” square, the place, for example, where Barcelona welcomes the Three Kings at Epiphany and the venue for key events in festivities in honour of the city’s patron saint, La Mercè.
A stone’s throw from the Rambla and the monument to Christopher Columbus, 75% of visitors to the Port Vell come through Portal de la Pau, its most outstanding reference point. The square, dear to the heart of all Barcelonans, is the departure place of the traditional “Golondrinas”, pleasure boats, and one of the most charming areas in the entire Port Vell.
Due to its emblematic nature, the square is reserved, in the main, for institutional acts, but it can also be used temporarily and exceptionally, for private promotions of particular importance and social impact.
