This “Palace of the Sea” is an example of typical 19th-century port architecture. Originally built between 1880 and 1890 as the General Trade Warehouses, it has now been converted into the Museum of the History of Catalonia (Museu d’Història de Catalunya) as well as housing the offices of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia’s Department of Welfare and the Family. Beneath the characteristic arches of this splendid building, moreover, several restaurants offer excellent cuisine. On sunny days, the tables outside these establishments, on the wharf overlooking the moored pleasure craft, are full of diners enjoying a good meal.
