Palau de Mar, “Palace of the Sea”, is an example of typical 19th-century industrial architecture. It was build between 1889 and 1890 to house the old General Trade Warhouses. In 1992, it was restored to transform it into business units on the ground floor and offices and a museum on the upper floors.
Today it houses the History Museum of Catalonia and the Department of Welfare of the Catalan Government. Beneath the building’s characteristic arches, there are numerous restaurants with terraces spilling out onto the quay just a few yards from berthed sailing boats.
